3R Community
One of our main tasks is networking. This means international networking between different 3R organizations or national networking of the scientific community (e.g. MUI animal free cluster) in Austria. Our members play a major role in this, our private members and above all our supporting members. Are you also interested in joining our 3R community and becoming a member? We would be delighted to have your support.
3R Organizations
MUI animalFree research cluster
The MUI animalFree Research Cluster aims to further develop alternative, animal-free models (organoids, stem cells, 3D cultures) and replacement reagents using state-of-the-art technologies (high content/high throughput screening, single cell analysis, 3D bioprinting, NGS), thus forming the basis for pioneering animal-free research.
To this end, numerous researchers at the Medical University of Innsbruck (MUI) have joined forces to teach alternatives to animal testing in the medical and molecular medicine curriculum in lectures and practical courses, to strengthen animal-free research through high-quality publications and public relations work and to initiate a paradigm shift towards optimized, humane models..
Research
"Animal experimentation has been one of the most controversial areas of animal use, mainly due to the intentional harms inflicted upon animals for the sake of hoped-for benefits in humans."
- Animal Experimentation: Working Towards a Paradigm Change, 2019
Within our cluster and based on our different expertise, we work closely on the design of optimized human barriers (skin, lung, intestine, mucosa) and neurological models (BBB). These can additionally contain vascularization and immune components and can be interconnected via microfluidic devices. Using these models, we can advance current topics - e.g. viral infections such as SARS-CoV-2 and its consequences - in cell cultures that recapitulate the microarchitecture and functions of living organs.
The application of epidemiological and in-silico tools provides additional insight into the strength of non-animal testing methods. Specific disease-related questions as well as a holistic insight through the combination of different organs developed within the MUI animalFree research cluster via a disease-on-a-chip platform can be addressed.
